Effective Way to Read Books to Young Children

Dr Grover Whitehurst and the Stony Brook Reading and Language Project developed an interactive method of reading to preschoolers.  In Dialogic Reading, the parent or teacher encourages the child to become the teller of the story.

PEER sequence, a short interaction between child and adult, is the fundamental reading technique in Dialogic Reading.  The adult:

*Prompts the child to say something about the book.

*Evaluates the child’s response.

*Expands the child’s response by rephrasing and adding information to it.

*Repeats the prompt to make sure the child has learned from the expansion.
